How to Design a Safe School Chemistry Lab

1. Location & Layout Planning

  • Choose a well-ventilated area, away from classrooms.
  • Provide wide entrances and exits for emergencies.
  • Have separate preparation and storage rooms.
  • Arrange benches in island or perimeter style for easy supervision.

2. Furniture & Workstations

  • Use chemical-resistant workbenches (epoxy/phenolic resin).
  • Provide individual student workstations with gas, water & electricity.
  • Use height-appropriate stools/tables with rounded corners.

3. Ventilation & Air Quality

  • Install fume hoods for volatile chemicals.
  • Ensure cross-ventilation with exhaust fans and windows.
  • Maintain proper air circulation with filters.

4. Safety Equipment

  • Fire extinguishers (Class B & C), fire blankets, sand buckets.
  • First-aid kit with eyewash solution and burn ointments.
  • Emergency shower and eyewash stations.
  • Clearly marked emergency exits with signage.

5. Chemical Storage

  • Separate cabinets for acids, bases, solvents.
  • Ventilated lockable storage cupboards.
  • Color-coded labelling for easy identification.
  • Flammable chemicals in flameproof cabinets.

6. Utilities & Safety Controls

  • Gas lines with individual shut-off valves.
  • Non-corrosive taps and proper drainage.
  • Electrical outlets with surge protection.
  • Emergency main switch for gas and electricity.

7. Lighting & Flooring

  • Bright glare-free LED lighting.
  • Non-slip, chemical-resistant vinyl/epoxy flooring.
  • Avoid carpets or wood flooring (fire hazard).

8. Teacher’s Demonstration Area

  • Central demo table with fume extraction.
  • Smart board/projector for interactive teaching.
  • Lockable drawers for sensitive materials.

9. Rules & Training

  • Display lab safety rules clearly.
  • Train students on chemical handling and emergency procedures.
  • Conduct regular fire and chemical spill drills.
